On the 22nd June 2013, IACT College had a workshop known as Creative Writing Workshop; a few secondary students around KL and PJ (Okay, everywhere in Selangor/KL side to be specific), and not to forget, a few Nuffnang bloggers attended to this event as well.
In case you are wondering what’s
IACT College specialize in:-
“IACT College, Malaysia’s only
communication college founded and owned by the creative industry recently
hosted a Creative Writing Workshop within its campus in Jaya One, Petaling
Jaya.“
ANDDDDD, in case you are wondering why IACT College eventually came up with this workshop at this period of time simply because creative writing workshop is the
first amongst a series of workshops designed to introduce students to the
careers within the creative communication industry. Upcoming workshops will
introduce Audio Recording, Photography, Digital Design, Marketing and
Videography. These workshops aim to give participants interested in creative
communications a taste of their future careers. With industry professionals
leading classes in settings that mirror real-life working conditions, IACT
College students are trained by experienced lecturers to be job ready with
hands-on learning giving IACT graduates an advantage over their competitors.
Got the click? ANYWAYS, I shall
continue with where I was.. *pause for a moment* Oh yes, the workshop!
The workshop started off with registrations for the students and bloggers whom attended to the workshop as
they registered themselves while filling up the questionnaire the workshop
provided (getting to know your interest plus describing yourself in a creative
way)
Estimating around 9:45am, the event
started off with a quick brief and a welcoming session with the Marketing
Department, Mark Grunden (scroll down in case you’re wondering who is this
awesome man with a fantastic name). Just another short yet sweet speech, he
engaged with the audience more towards IACT College. After handing to the
Marketing Department, Mr Evengel Loges take over the crowd (he was the MC
throughout the entire talk and while waiting for the event to start before that,
he entertained the crowd (the students) to not make the entire event dead. (Just
kidding about the dead part, he makes the event livelier in a way). Moving on,
the creative writing was conducted by Mr. Nicholas Lee, Academic Director of
IACT College, the workshop aimed to introduce participants to creative writing
with a focus on fiction, started off with a simple yet out of ordinary ice
breaker where the newcomers step out and introduce themselves as an object, or
an item, symbol, things that represent them. They were given about 3-5 minutes
to come up with something that symbolizes/something that describes them
creatively. However, many of them came up with brilliant ideas and unique
things/element that describe them perfectly. (Well, as you know in the morning,
they seemed a little bit tired but after a while, they were alright, time to
crack-up sleepy brains in the morning. WOOOHOOO! \ ^_^ / )

Quoted by Mr. Nicholas Lee while he
was giving his speech to the audience, “Writers who are just starting out often
show rather than tell. Good pieces of fiction do not just inform; they engage.
Great stories move you, they challenge your thoughts. Today we started a
journey and I hope to read some great stories in the coming months” said
Nicholas, who also heads the English Department at IACT College. It shows how
experience he is when it comes to Creative Writing, thinking out of the box and
something extraordinary about him makes him come out with such inspiring words
that motivates the audience to strive for the better, and improving themselves
to be better as what I observed. They are so determined and focus onto this
workshop which is really an advantage for them to succeed eventhough how weak they are but still want to achieve something. "There's always room for improvement."
Right after the short introduction, Mr. Nicholas Lee moved on and explained more towards the insight of character, plot, setting, conflict and a theme when it comes to a short story.
Mr. Nicholas Lee explained how to make it real as students tend to think creativity and seeing things differently. "You need these two elements such as details and imperfection in order to make it real."
Mr. Nicholas Lee showed a few entertaining, short films such as Monster INC and the black and white ad (about a guy wanting to send something to the girl on the opposite block, sweet isn't it?) while the last activity of the workshop was going on.
Right after every activities has ended, Mr Loges showed a preview of Oppa IACT Style. Here's a preview of the video in case you haven't seen it yet:-
After screening the IACT Style video, student ambassadors gave them (secondary students and bloggers) a short tour around IACT College such as the broadcasting room, recording studio and the library.
After the short tour, they were given McDonalds' as their lunch, group pictures taken place in the end of the event and gave out goodie bags to the participants.
However, here are a few pictures taken on the event itself. Picture speaks louder than words. In case you don't like to read, pictures give you a clearer understanding from top to bottom. *grins*
In case you are wondering what are these drawings for, it's putting words into pictures such as imaging the scenario taken place while reading the paragraph each student came up with a short paragraph and describing how the character looks like. That's how movies came about and books are just so informative that it describes a person really well.
Five interesting lines given as an example.
A few bloggers decided to pose in front of the green screen background.
What's in the bag? o________o
Last but not least:-
A group picture!
